This Weekend — Montreal and Austin, TX

8 12 2010

Reminder about this weekend and next Monday night in Austin — Adam O’Callaghan, who staged a massive Raymond Scott centennial celebration a couple of years ago in Montreal, has now organized a two-night event at the historic Rialto Theatre in downtown Montreal.

This will be a unique multimedia event at the beautiful Rialto, with the Montreal premiere of my film, and I’ll be doing a Q&A after the film both nights.

Rialto Theatre

Adam’s “Le Nouveau Raymond Scott Quintette” will perform some of Raymond Scott’s most famous chamber jazz compositions from the late-1930s.

Otis Fodder of The Bran Flakes, currently commissioned for the creation of a Raymond Scott remix album, will play Scott themed music into the night.

Really looking forward to being back in one of my favorite cities and working with Adam.  Here’s a link to official listing for the event http://www.theatrerialto.ca/events?eventId=23&lang=en

Alamo Drafthouse

And  two days later  I’ll be at the legendary original Alamo Drafthouse Theater (American spelling) in equally legendary Austin, Texas for a showing of the film as part of their Monday Music Signature Series.  The Alamo is a real favorite of dedicated lovers of  film, a great venue with a unique style and atmosphere that shows films that span all styles and genres, and I’m honored my film has been chosen to be part of their program.  I’ll be there for Q&A and all that good stuff…  Here’s a link:  http://www.originalalamo.com/Show.aspx?id=7889.

Hope to see and meet a lot Austin area Texas fans of Raymond Scott there, (and I’ve heard from quite a few previously hoping for a showing there, so glad I can now report this is happening).

Manchester…SnipSnap Music Presents…

10 11 2010

Last weekend in Manchester was another unbelievable event.  Jon Kraus, of SnipSnap Music, put the whole thing together and did an amazing job, with underwriting by Red Bull.  The evening consisted of performances by a number of Manchester based groups and DJs, followed, of course, by a screening of the film.  It took place at the Soup Kitchen, normally a well known and excellent local Manchester bohemian eatery, that was converted to a cool club/screening room for the evening’s events.  The venue was packed with an SRO crowd, and the events were spectacular — special Raymond Scott sets by several DJs, including Jon Kraus who somehow also found time to do a DJ set of his own.

All sets were supported with very cool photo-animated visuals, and there were live musical performances from local acts Demdike Stare, Illum Sphere, Kdkanevil, and the one-off supergroup The Manchester Research Transfer Project, which was composed of 808 State’s Graham Massey, Silverclub’s Henrietta Smith-Rolla, and Dennis Jones — they played their set of re-imagined Raymond Scott compositions on vintage analogue synthesizers.  With the participation of so many talented people (who were all working on a volunteer basis), the evening kind of felt like like the first annual Scottfest (a concept that’s been percolating in my mind for a while).  It was really that special.

And yes, the film was shown too — the space had started the evening as a kind of funky nightclub environment and during a brief intermission it was

transformed into a cinema.  Had a great QA after….so all in all just a unique evening and my thanks go out again to Jon Krause for making it all happen, Red Bull for their support, and to the Soup Kitchen and everyone who donated their time, talent and work to make the event a reality and huge success.

Next screenings are the weekend and Monday night of December 10-13, the first event with Adam O’Callaghan in Montreal at the Rialto Theatre, and then on Monday December 13 as a Music Monday event at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX.  I’ll be at both events…  will be posting more about them as the date approaches.

Here’s the update about next week’s event at the Soup Kitchen in Manchester (England, not Vermont).  First, it’s being presented in partnership with Red Bull, which is great, and means it will be easier for everyone to stay up late to enjoy the many events that are planned.  Of course the film is being shown, and I’ll be there to introduce and do a QA after….but wait, there’s more!

Event organizer Jon Kraus has put together a scintillating lineup that includes a live music showcase paying tribute to the work of Raymond Scott featuring:

THE MANHATTAN RESEARCH TRANSFER PROJECT feat: GRAHAM MASSEY (808 STATE / TOOLSHED / MASSONIX) DENNIS JONES (HUMBLE SOUL) HENRIETTA SMITH ROLLA (SISTERS OF TRANSISTERS) One off exclusive collaboration set that will be re-interpreting choice selections as well as creating new compositions that will capture the madcap energy & moods of such favourites as ‘the Bass-line generator’ ‘Baltimore Gas & Electric Co’ ‘Lightworks’ & much more.

ILLUM SPHERE (FAT CITY, 3024, TECTONIC) & KIDKANEVIL (FIRST WORD) – Melonball bounce set Red Bull Academy London 2010 participants Illum Sphere & Kidkanevil will be putting on a one off show consisiting of brand new material sampling the sounds of Scott – some of which will be bespoke for the occassion, as well as some tracks from the forthcoming Kidkanevil beat tape titled ‘Tokyorkshire Research Inc.’  Visuals will be provided by the legend they call e-man!! Another one off exclusive set for this event!

DEMDIKE STARE (MODERN LOVE) Aka Miles Whitaker (Pendle Coven / MLZ) & Sean Canty (Finders Keepers / Haxan) will be unsettling the proceedings with their chilling take on deep Dub via Anatolia & the dankest strains of Concrete / Library music.

Plus DJ’s Mo-G, Eil-R, Kelvin Brown and Jon-K himself.  Here’s a link to the Red Bull page for the event.  And here’s a link to SnipSnap music’s page.

This event is shaping up as a really big one, on the Facebook page over 135 people are planning on attending as of tonight, with another 194 maybes, so I’m totally psyched about being there.  And if you’re in the Manchester area hope you will be too!
