Raymond Scott Festival Update

4 07 2018

ScottworkdHappy July 4th and want to let all know that the Scottworks tickets are now on sale, and selling briskly, so if you’d like to attend don’t wait too long to buy.  Again, we’ve got some great panelists attending, including Herb Deutsch, co-inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, and Hal Willner, Grammy Winning music producer who Executive Produced the first Raymond Scott reissue–Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights.

Plus a lot of great exhibits, many of them interactive.  One of them will be a photo mural reproduction of the famed Raymond Scott Wall of RS Tape Decks Wall of SoundSound (a real one, not Phil Spector’s production style).  Attendees will be able to pose in front of it and channel their inner Raymond Scott.  Plus we’ve got a few surprises in the works.

And the evening concert will feature three time Grammy nominees Quartet San Francisco–they play unique string quartet versions of Raymond Scott classics.  Also appearing will be Skip Heller’s Carnival of SoulSkip is an incredibly eclectic musician and leader, and while he does play soul music he’s also a real authority on Raymond Scott (he’s great in the film), and is going to be playing tunes from across the Scott spectrum, including even his own versions of some Scott electronic music.

Our venue is the Colony Theatre in Burbank–we feel it’s the ideal space for us–a 268 seat theater with great acoustics and no bad seats, and always important in L.A. FREE PARKING.  Also important is food and drink–daytime tickets include coffee and pastries in the morning and a meet and greet reception that includes wine and beer after the day’s events and before the concert.  Lunch is not included but there are going to be food trucks right outside and lots of restaurant options in the adjacent Burbank Town Center.

Hope to see you at the festival in September!

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there, and of course to my Dad’s spirit that lives Scottworkdon in his work and our memories.  And speaking of those, I’ve been remiss in announcing on this site some exciting news–we’re presenting Scottworks–The Raymond Scott Festival in Los Angeles on September 8th, 2018 in Los Angeles,

It will be a symposium by day with exhibits; panel discussions with Scott devotees and colleagues, and musical interludes. At night there will be a concert of all genres of Raymond Scott music performed by a stellar group of musicians, including three-time Grammy nominees Quartet San Francisco.

Tickets go on sale June 28th.  Hope to see you there!

Film now Available to Stream and Download!

8 09 2015

Deconstructing DadWell, finally! Big news, the film is now available for streaming and download on Vimeo, something a lot of people have asked for over the last couple of years. If you are one of those people hope you’ll order and also spread the word! Wanted to wait till September 10th so it could be part of the Raymond Scott birthday celebration, but some other plans prevent that, so we’re starting the celebration a bit early . Here’s a link to the order page on Vimeo .https://vimeo.com/ondemand/deconstructingdad.
Thanks and Happy Streaming!

And do want to note that the DVDs are still available and will continue to be.  There’s a lot of extra material on the DVD’s that isn’t on Vimeo, so if you want to know even more about Raymond Scott do order the DVD–link here

Free Screening at Yale University on April 6th

2 04 2015

sod_mastheadFollowers of this site are sure to notice there haven’t been many events and posts lately (but of course the DVD is still available). Once in awhile, though, an event comes-up, and this Monday promises to be very special. Through the efforts of legendary Mac guru David Biedny, who teaches in the Design Department at the Yale School of Drama, the film will be shown this Monday, April 6th, at 4:30pm, on the Yale campus — full address is 212 York Street, Room #106, New Haven, CT. I will attend, answer questions, and discuss the film (and whatever else comes up, and I expect it to be a lively discussion) afterwards. It’s a free event that’s open to the public, so if you’re in that area, hope to see you there! David Biedny

Huge thanks to David Biedny, and fellow Yale professor David Budries, for making this happen. I’m very excited to be showing the film at Yale!

Berlin Techno Collective Discovers Raymond Scott

17 01 2015

LOCAL SUICIDE

Got an email a few weeks ago from Anastasia “Sissi” Rada, who is a Berlin based harpist who also studied electronic music.  She had just discovered Raymond Scott and realized (quite rightly in my opinion!) that among other accompllshments he was in many ways the father of Techno (which is a huge cultural phenomenon in Berlin).

Though her electronic music studies were at the university level there hadn’t been anything about Raymond Scott in her courses–an all too common omission!  Having discovered and immersed herself in in Scott music and lore over the past month or so, Sissi decided to help right a wrong by writing an article for Local Suicide–the famous DJ Collective she belongs to.in Berlin (no, I don’t know how they arrived at that name–love to hear from someone who does!).  As part of that lively and entertaining article (with a lot of RS YouTube clips for musical examples) she sent me a number of questions which I did my best to answer, the interview is at the end of the article. Not directly film related, but hope you’ll allow me the freedom of going a bit off topic.  Here’s the link.

And thanks to Sissi for her hard work on this, and a big welcome to her on joining the ever growing ranks of the Raymond Scott faithful who work tirelessly to try and make sure the world gives my father the recognition he deserves!

1 12 2014

DeluxeDVD Cover 12_131OK, this doesn’t really have anything to do with cyber Monday or the great T-Bone Walker song, but the phrase just popped into my head as I began writing this realizing that coincidentally it was coming out on “Cyber Monday.”  But it is a holiday bargain–once again we’re reducing DVD prices for the holiday season, $5 off both the Deluxe and Original DVD’s.  So the base price for the Deluxe is now $20 and for the original price is $15.  Click Here To Order     These prices will only be in effect for a few weeks, so if you’ve been procrastinating about ordering for yourself or as a gift, now’s the time to act!
