Raymond Scott Festival Update

4 07 2018

ScottworkdHappy July 4th and want to let all know that the Scottworks tickets are now on sale, and selling briskly, so if you’d like to attend don’t wait too long to buy.  Again, we’ve got some great panelists attending, including Herb Deutsch, co-inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, and Hal Willner, Grammy Winning music producer who Executive Produced the first Raymond Scott reissue–Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights.

Plus a lot of great exhibits, many of them interactive.  One of them will be a photo mural reproduction of the famed Raymond Scott Wall of RS Tape Decks Wall of SoundSound (a real one, not Phil Spector’s production style).  Attendees will be able to pose in front of it and channel their inner Raymond Scott.  Plus we’ve got a few surprises in the works.

And the evening concert will feature three time Grammy nominees Quartet San Francisco–they play unique string quartet versions of Raymond Scott classics.  Also appearing will be Skip Heller’s Carnival of SoulSkip is an incredibly eclectic musician and leader, and while he does play soul music he’s also a real authority on Raymond Scott (he’s great in the film), and is going to be playing tunes from across the Scott spectrum, including even his own versions of some Scott electronic music.

Our venue is the Colony Theatre in Burbank–we feel it’s the ideal space for us–a 268 seat theater with great acoustics and no bad seats, and always important in L.A. FREE PARKING.  Also important is food and drink–daytime tickets include coffee and pastries in the morning and a meet and greet reception that includes wine and beer after the day’s events and before the concert.  Lunch is not included but there are going to be food trucks right outside and lots of restaurant options in the adjacent Burbank Town Center.

Hope to see you at the festival in September!

Father’s Day 2018

17 06 2018

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there, and of course to my Dad’s spirit that lives Scottworkdon in his work and our memories.  And speaking of those, I’ve been remiss in announcing on this site some exciting news–we’re presenting Scottworks–The Raymond Scott Festival in Los Angeles on September 8th, 2018 in Los Angeles,

It will be a symposium by day with exhibits; panel discussions with Scott devotees and colleagues, and musical interludes. At night there will be a concert of all genres of Raymond Scott music performed by a stellar group of musicians, including three-time Grammy nominees Quartet San Francisco.

Tickets go on sale June 28th.  Hope to see you there!

Happy Birthday Dad! Plus German Radio Interview

10 09 2013

Wanted to take a moment note that my father was born 105 years ago today.  And of course my film is an ongoing birthday gift to him (and I hope it will be a gift that keeps on giving).

Stay tuned for more developments.

And at the moment, if you’re a German speaker, you can literally tune in to a WDR (German national radio network) podcast of a piece about Raymond Scott done by Christian Kosfeld.  The piece aired on September 9th, (timed to be near the birthday), but this link is to the podcast info, so you should be able to listen to it here.  And here is the overall info page. I was interviewed for it, along with Gert-Jan Blom (who spoke in English) , so there are a few English snippets, but there are only brief introductory excerpts followed by German translations with the English under, so it’s really best for German speakers!

Anyhow, thanks to Christian for making this all happen!

Deconstructing Dad for Dad’s Day!

2 06 2013
Order DVD

Order DVD

So you could get your dad another unneeded tool for his workshop, or another unneeded tie for his closet (though I don’t think most people even wear ties any more, do they?).  But you get the idea — a DVD of Deconstructing Dad would of course make a terrific and original Father’s Day present for the Raymond Scott fan, or any electronic music loving,  Looney Tunes loving, or jazz history loving…..Dad!

And even if your Dad doesn’t fall into those categories, don’t forget the film is also very much about fathers and sons, parents and children, and some of the best reactions I’ve had from people who have seen it have been from people who responded and were moved by the father son aspect, so I think it would be the ideal present for any Dad, though as the filmmaker, yes I’m a bit prejudiced in favor of the film.  Here’s the link to order the DVD:

And of course if you want to get something a bit more traditional, you can also get film related and Raymond Scott related t-shirts (and other shirts and items) from our Merch Table.

Either way you’ll be helping to support independent film and of course….. .me!downbeach award sjw

Delivery to the USA generally takes about a week or so, so as of this posting, there’s still plenty of time until the big day on June 16th.  And if you read this close to the date, expedited shipping is available…..

Thanks!

London Screening Tuesday March 12th!

8 03 2013

Random header image at NonclassicalIt’s been awhile since there has been a UK event, but that changes next Tuesday March 12th when the cutting edge London based Nonclassical, a musical artists collective composed of “the next generation of classical performers, composers and promoters who are redefining the rules, and breaking out of the constraints of the traditional classical concert hall.”

Sounds good to me, and I’m so happy that as part of their Pioneers of Electronic Music event they are devoting a night to Raymond Scott, and the film is part of that.  Here’s a link to their listing for the event, it starts at 7:30 pm and the address is Hackney Picturehouse, 270 Mare Street London E8 1HE.

Though the film has been shown elsewhere in the UK this is in fact the London premiere!  Unfortunately I can’t make the trip to England at this time, but hope those of you who live anywhere in the greater London area can attend…
