Here’s the update about next week’s event at the Soup Kitchen in Manchester (England, not Vermont).  First, it’s being presented in partnership with Red Bull, which is great, and means it will be easier for everyone to stay up late to enjoy the many events that are planned.  Of course the film is being shown, and I’ll be there to introduce and do a QA after….but wait, there’s more!

Event organizer Jon Kraus has put together a scintillating lineup that includes a live music showcase paying tribute to the work of Raymond Scott featuring:

THE MANHATTAN RESEARCH TRANSFER PROJECT feat: GRAHAM MASSEY (808 STATE / TOOLSHED / MASSONIX) DENNIS JONES (HUMBLE SOUL) HENRIETTA SMITH ROLLA (SISTERS OF TRANSISTERS) One off exclusive collaboration set that will be re-interpreting choice selections as well as creating new compositions that will capture the madcap energy & moods of such favourites as ‘the Bass-line generator’ ‘Baltimore Gas & Electric Co’ ‘Lightworks’ & much more.

ILLUM SPHERE (FAT CITY, 3024, TECTONIC) & KIDKANEVIL (FIRST WORD) – Melonball bounce set Red Bull Academy London 2010 participants Illum Sphere & Kidkanevil will be putting on a one off show consisiting of brand new material sampling the sounds of Scott – some of which will be bespoke for the occassion, as well as some tracks from the forthcoming Kidkanevil beat tape titled ‘Tokyorkshire Research Inc.’  Visuals will be provided by the legend they call e-man!! Another one off exclusive set for this event!

DEMDIKE STARE (MODERN LOVE) Aka Miles Whitaker (Pendle Coven / MLZ) & Sean Canty (Finders Keepers / Haxan) will be unsettling the proceedings with their chilling take on deep Dub via Anatolia & the dankest strains of Concrete / Library music.

Plus DJ’s Mo-G, Eil-R, Kelvin Brown and Jon-K himself.  Here’s a link to the Red Bull page for the event.  And here’s a link to SnipSnap music’s page.

This event is shaping up as a really big one, on the Facebook page over 135 people are planning on attending as of tonight, with another 194 maybes, so I’m totally psyched about being there.  And if you’re in the Manchester area hope you will be too!

Two Upcoming Screenings–And Sensoria Report

12 05 2010

There are two screenings happening this  week. One is at the Park City Film Music Festival--a ground breaking event dedicated to all aspects of music in film, everything from music based documentaries to music videos and feature films that use music as an essential element. The film is being shown at the Egyptian Theater in Park City, Utah on Wednesday May 19th at 6:15 pm, and I will be there. Here’s a link to the festival site, you have to then use the pull down menu to get to the specific page for May 19th: http://www.pcfmf.com So if you’re in that area, hope to see you there.

Then it’s back home for an “industry” screening on Friday night May 21 very close to where I live. It’s at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill in Rockland County NY, and is sponsored by the recently formed Rockland Filmmaker’s Group, which is part of Rivertown Film. And….it’s free!   For more info go to http://www.rivertownfilm.org/rockland_filmmakers.html

Finally, a brief report on the screening at the Sensoria  Festival in Sheffield England on April 26–it was a lovely event at another wonderful music film festival.  There was a most enjoyable Q&A afterwards with Martyn Ware and I met lots of different people, including several Americans who had come over to participate in various festival events.   Many thanks to Jo Wingate and Nigel Humberstone for producing such a terrific music/film festival.

Library of Congress Screening/Sensoria

14 04 2010

Well, despite fears of nuclear summit gridlock the April 12 screening as part of the Jazz in the Spring series  at the Library of Congress turned out to be a rousing success.  The theater was almost full, and many of the attendees were Raymond Scott aficionados, but there were also several newbies who reacted enthusiastically to the film.  Afterwards there was lively Q&A.  All in all a wonderful night for the film and for me personally.  Thanks again to Larry Applebaum and the LOC for hosting the event.  And for those of you in the area, there are two more films remaining in this year’s series: http://www.loc.gov/rr/perform/concert/0910-jazzfilm.html

And for those of you in the UK, a bit of a reminder, the film will be having its UK premiere at the Sensoria Festival of Music and Film in Sheffield on April 27th.  This is a really cool festival and I’m very excited to be a part of it–I will be there for the screening and discussion afterward with Martyn Ware.  http://tinyurl.com/y7ep8xo.  Update April 21–of course there’s some risk of my travel being canceled due to this pesky volcano situation in Iceland, but at the moment things are looking up for our Saturday departure….

Attn Brits: Two UK Festivals!

16 02 2010

The film is now scheduled for two exciting UK events over the next few months! Event one takes place March 28 at the Sage Gateshead Jazz Festival in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and is presented in co-operation with the Northern Lights Film Festival which occurs at the same time. It includes excerpts from the film, a performance by Stu Brown’s Raymond Scott Project, based in Glasgow, and a panel discussion with Stu and me that will be chaired by Alyn Shipton,  author and Times jazz critic.  For more details about the Sage Gateshead dates click on this link

The second event is at the cutting edge Sensoria Festival of Music and Film in Sheffield. This is the official UK premiere of the film–the festival runs from April 23-29, and the film is now definitely  scheduled for showing on April 27,  though the specific listing is not yet up on their website.   I’ll be posting again when more details but here’s a link to the overall Sensoria Festival website–the schedule is not yet up on their site.  I’ll be attending this event as well….

I’ll be posting with more info as it becomes available…
